Ignorance is something to be proud of
Here in Oxford, the local college paper is the "Daily Mississippian." I don't really expect much from a student newspaper, but this is absolutely ridiculous.
An excerpt from the editorial:
Nov. 2, 2004 will be remembered as the day Americans told the homosexual community to go back in the closet.
Better stated, it was the day America shoved the homosexual movement into its closet and jammed a chair under the knob so it could not get out.
Eleven states, including left-leaning Oregon, approved defense of marriage amendments to their constitutions.
All of these pieces of legislation passed by a significant margin. In our state it garnered a 6-1 vote.

In the mid-90s, the television show Ellen debuted. The main character, played by Ellen Degeneres, was an out-of-the-closet lesbian whose sexuality played a key role in the show. Again those for traditional values yawned...
Following the success of Ellen, the homosexual community started flooding television with images of homosexuality and has made a point to proclaim it as normal.
While this was going on, two states, Massachusetts and California have both had renegades fight for the homosexual world view. In San Francisco, mayor Gavin Newsom defied the state legislature and ordered the city clerk to issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples. In May 2004, the Massachusetts high court legalized gay marriage.
These two events woke those for traditional marriage from their slumber, but not before both acts of treachery were perpetrated upon a slumbering American electorate...
And a response from a concerned member of the community...
I'm sure the founding fathers are spinning in their graves after hearing all the bitching about fags not having equal rights. Nature shows us that homosexuality is unnatural and wrong (most of the liberals have pointed out that the Bible has no authority, so I won't mention that). John Johnson, check the f@#%ing electoral vote distribution map, and you'll see that others besides the "slave" states are red. Maybe you should take a closer look at the article and see that the author is trying to show you that people want more traditional leadership, rather than reading about a president who cared more about BJ's than our economy.
This from someone who calls himself "Capt. Crisis" and regularly spews his almost comical Nazi-like commentary on the Daily Mississippian.
Is this sad? Yes. Does it really matter in the great scheme of things? At first glance, no. However, this rubbish is what most people believe here in Mississippi and I dare say a lot of "red" states even if they have slightly better conditioning not to say so out loud or in polite company.
It is actually scary.
